Today, the Around Town Team is here to help you prepare your home for winter, so you don't have to worry about any costly damage when the cold weather comes. Here are 6 easy things you can start doing now:

-Get your furnace serviced: The heating companies get really busy this time of year. Consider having them come in soon before they get backed up. That way, you don't have to wait a month to get your heating system ready to go once the cold weather hits.

-Have the chimney swept: This should be done once a year, and there's no better time than now, before it's being used.

-Clean the gutters: The leaves will be falling soon - make sure you clean out the gutters before the winter months arrive. This will help with ice damming and other water intrusion issues.

-Reverse ceiling fans: Reversing the direction of your ceiling fans is a nifty way to enhance the efficiency of your heating system. It creates a downdraft to keep hot air from escaping.

-Drain hoses: Make sure your hose bibs are turned off and drained. If this is not done water can sit in the plumbing and freeze, which will cause a nasty breakage in your home.

-Get a snow blower tune-up: Mechanics who specialize in snow blower tune-ups get busy during the winter months; beat the crowd and make sure yours is working properly before the first snow.
